When did you join the Decoding Dyslexia North Carolina (DDNC) Board? September 2021

Why did you decide to join the DDNC Board? I would like to be part of the solution for our kids and families in North Carolina who are needing support while putting all these pieces of the dyslexia puzzle together.

Who inspired you to learn more about dyslexia? During my senior year of college, I was diagnosed with dyslexia. I never knew why school and learning were so difficult for me. Finally, having a name for it helped me a great deal. With a diagnosis, I was finally able to pursue help – which was all educationally based. In my 22-year teaching career, I’ve taught in public schools, private settings, and alternative. My students throughout the years have inspired me to continue learning about dyslexia and the many ways I can help them learn.

What is the best piece of advice you have received on your dyslexia journey?

“When you exhaust all possibilities remember this: you haven’t.” -Thomas Edison

“There is ALWAYS another solution.” -Aunt Eileen

What is one piece of advice you would like to give others? You are your child’s greatest advocate. Do what you need to do in order to navigate an educational path that is best for your child.

What are some of your favorite dyslexia resources?
