After Donna Gargett and her 6-year-old daughter, Bella, were diagnosed with dyslexia, she decided to get active in raising awareness in the Jacksonville area. Dyslexia, a neurological disorder, is caused by different wiring of the brain and causes difficulty decoding, and the ability to accurately and fluently recognize words, according to the International Dyslexia Association. It also affects spelling. It affects, Gargett says, her everyday life. “A lot of times it’s downplayed,” she said. “When it really affects more than just being able to read or write.”
