When did you join the Decoding Dyslexia North Carolina Board? August 2023
Why did you decide to join the DDNC Board? I wanted to join the DDNC Board to be part of spreading awareness about dyslexia and the resources DDNC offers everyone.
Who inspired you to learn more about dyslexia? Emma, my brave daughter, inspired me to learn more about dyslexia. The more I learn with and from her, the more committed I become to helping others who are also navigating this journey.
What is the best piece of advice you have received on your dyslexia journey? Continue to ask questions and document everything. Save progress monitoring updates, student work samples, report cards, and assessment reports. It is always okay to ask questions along the way.
What is one piece of advice you would like to give others? Trust your gut. The path to supporting and advocating for a learner with dyslexia is a dynamic mix of trust, patience, and urgency. Every learner deserves to have access to the services and the supports they need.
What are some of your favorite dyslexia resources? Audio books, speech to text apps, and A Parents’ Guide to Special Education in NC by Duke’s Children’s Law Clinic
